Blick Bassy

Artiste et auteur accompli, Blick Bassy chante l’histoire occultée de son Cameroun natal. En hommage à Ruben Um Nyobè, grand défenseur des droits de son pays exécuté en 1958, il donnera à son dernier album le titre de son année de mort. Aussi revendicatif qu’émouvant, « 1958 » (sortie prévue en mars) se joue allègrement des catégories habituelles, faisant cohabiter cordes, cuivres et synthés dans un nectar inédit, à la fois minimal et organique, d’une rare modernité. Son écoute donne la sensation d’être à la fois dans le cœur du village et dans la plus totale universalité. À découvrir sur scène pour en savourer pleinement l’essence.

The accomplished singer-songwriter Blick Bassy recants the sombre history of his native Cameroon.  He has called his latest album “1958”, after the year that Ruben Um Nyobé, the great defender of his country’s identity and rights, was executed.  “1958” (due out in March) is as committed as it is moving, it plays around openly with the usual musical genres, allowing strings, brass and synthesizers to blend together into an as yet un-tasted nectar that is both minimalist and organic, filled with a rare sense of modernity. Listening to it is like finding oneself transported into the heart of the village but at the same time surrounded by a sense of total universality. You really need to see him on stage to get the full effect.
